Residential Projects Information and FAQ’s

Our projects usually have a cast of 30 young people who are supported by a team of 4 chaperones and a professional artistic team.

You will have a great fun during the project working with other talented young people from all over the East Midlands. Following our audition tour, if you are offered a place on the course you will be sent a detailed information pack providing you with everything you need to know about the project.

Below are some of the questions we get asked....

What will happen at the audition?

Auditions will consist of a fun two hour drama workshop, providing us with the best opportunity to see the full capabilities of the candidates. When you arrive you will need to register and then you will be shown into the audition room. If you have parents with you they are free to stay at the venue and relax, or perhaps head off shopping for a couple of hours while you are auditioning with us! During the audition you will get involved with fun drama exercises and work on small scenes in groups. Don’t worry, the auditions aren’t scary – we want you to have fun and be relaxed so that you can show us what you can do!

I’m not sure I can afford the course fee. Should I still audition?

Absolutely! If you are offered a place on the course we will send a fundraising pack to you with great ideas for raising your course fee. The pack will also include suggestions of foundations and organisations to apply to for funding for your course fee. We are developing links with a number of regional charities who, if you are eligible, may be able to offer financial support for your place. We will support anyone who may have problems raising the money to pay for their course fee as much as we can.

What happens after the audition?

We will contact you as soon as possible after the auditions to let you know if you have been successful. We will then give you more details about the course. We have to charge a course fee for the project. Depending on your project the fee will be between £385 and £485 - this includes accommodation, all food, tuition and an EMYT t-shirt. But don’t worry…we will send you our fund raising pack with lots of ideas and tips about how to raise your course fee. We are always here to help! The course fee is also payable in instalments to help you even more!

What will I be doing each day?

You will be very busy during the course. After a good breakfast you will start your rehearsal day with a warmup. The day is then split into three sessions. Morning, afternoon and evening. In these sessions you will be devising and rehearsing in preparation for the final performance.

I’m a bit worried about living away from home, will I be ok?

It can be really daunting living away from home and for some people this will be the first time but once you are on the course you will be too busy to miss home! We have a Head of Pastoral Care and a team of experienced chaperones who are with you on the course 24hours a day. They are there to look after you physically and mentally! Our pastoral staff will care for you, ensure you get the most out of the course and support you throughout the week.

Will there be other people my age on the course?

Yes! When we are auditioning we are looking for a selection of ages as well as talent so you’ll always have at least one other person around your age.

What rules are there on the course?

We want you to have a fun and exciting time on our course, but we are also here to look after you while you are away from home. Our Head of Pastoral Care and team of chaperones are there to act in loco parentis (in other words to act like your parents). We have a number of rules that ensure everyone’s safety and happiness and it is important that they are followed. We will send our handbook to successful applicants. Don’t worry though, we don’t have too many rules and they are all based around being sensible while you’re rehearsing and having fun!

Where will I be staying?

You will be staying in comfortable acommodation. If you have to share a room you will be put with other young people of the same age and, of course, with the same bedtimes.

At home I go to bed when I want, why do you have bedtimes on the course?

The course is exhausting and it is important that your look after your body, mind and voice! We have staggered bedtimes according to your age to make sure that you get enough rest and keep up your energy for the whole week. You will be part of a team during the week and it is also important that those people who want to sleep are allowed to and are not kept awake by other people’s noise!

I live close to the venue, can I stay at home during the week?

The residential element of the course is part of the experience. Once you have finished rehearsals for the day you will want to stay with the cast and relax and socialise. It is important that all participants bond over the week and living together helps that. Living and working together for a week will result in you making some strong friends.
